LYMPH DRAINAGE THERAPY
The
lymphatic system is complex, consisting primarily of lymph vessels and lymph
nodes. These structures filter toxins and foreign substances from the tissues,
recover crucial substances that have escaped from the blood and maintain a
healthy immune system.
Lymph
vessels rely on the contracting of many tiny muscular units throughout the body
in order to propel the lymph. The action of these muscular units can be hindered
or stopped by many factors, including fatigue, stress, lack of physical
activity, infections, swelling and age.
WHAT
HAPPENS WHEN THE LYMPH SYSTEM HAS PROBLEMS?
Fluids,
proteins, cells and toxins accumulate in the tissues.
WHAT
IS LYMPH DRAINAGE THERAPY?
Lymph
drainage therapy is a hands-on technique designed to activate and cleanse the
lymph system. The therapist uses flat hands and light pressure (approximately
the weight of a nickel) to detect the specific rhythm, depth, direction and
quality of lymph flow in the body. Wave-like movements are utilized to stimulate
proper lymph flow. The technique can be very relaxing and soothing.
WHAT
ARE THE BENEFITS OF LYMPH DRAINAGE THERAPY?
Reduction
in swelling
Detoxification
of the body
Relief
of chronic and subacute inflammation (i.e. sinusitis, bronchitis, acne,
allergies)
Reduction
in symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.
Relief
of chronic pain
Deep
relaxation to aid insomnia and stress
Reduction
in the pain of migraines
HISTORY
OF LYMPH DRAINAGE TECHNIQUES
The
origins of lymphatic drainage can be traced to two sources: the research of
Frederic Millard, a Canadian osteopathic physician in the 1920's, and Emil
Vodder, a Danish massage practitioner and doctor of philosophy, in the 1930's.
Lymph drainage therapy (LDT) developed from the research of Bruno Cllikly, M.D.
of France. Dr. Cllikly's techniques add new levels of precision to the
traditional techniques.
